UP junior golfers compete in GAM state tournament

EAST LANSING — Two Upper Peninsula golfers finished well off the pace among 27 entrants at the sixth annual Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Junior Invitational Sunday.

Paxton Johnson of Escanaba was 27th with rounds of 93-94 — 182. Payton Dube of Hancock was 25th with 93-90 — 183 at Forest Akers Golf Course.

Johnson beat Dube for the Upper Peninsula Junior championship last month at the Terrace Bluff Golf and Country Club in Gladstone and is a three-time U.P. high school champion.

Jasmine Ly of Windsor won the tournament at even par with 70-74 — 144.

In the boys junior tournament, Bradley Smithson of Grand Rapids posted a 142 (69-73) for top honors.

Marquette’s Tyler Bergwall finished in a tie for 28th (161) and Escanaba’s Nathan Rousseau shared 35th (164).

Powers’ Bryson Mercier was fifth in the boys age 15-under division at 183.
