Volleyball: Kingsford sweeps Maroons
KINGSFORD — Kingsford came out swinging and overpowered Menominee 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-10) in Great Northern Conference volleyball Monday.
“Tonight was a lot of fun because we were able to set a good tempo early and that was one of our big focuses,” said Kingsford head coach Jaclynn Kreider. “I think that was effective.”
Back-to-back kills from Aby Pickett helped the Flivvers (3-2) roll over the mistake-prone Maroons in the first set.
Pickett had consecutive aces when the Flivvers went on a five-point run for a 23-13 cushion in the second set. The senior middle had a team-high six aces on the night.
In the final set, Kingsford rolled to a 20-5 lead as Lexi Roberge served up two aces while Maddy Holmes and Tori Kowalkowski had kills.
The Flivvers cleared the bench in sweeping the Maroons.
“I love that we were able to get everybody in and see some kids show what they’ve been working on,” Kreider said. “We’ve been in a lot of tight ones this year and it’s been difficult to mix it up.”
Kowalkowski led the Flivvers with seven kills, followed by Pickett with six and four each from Olivia Allen and Ali Doolittle. Katherine Erickson posted 17 assists and Lexi Roberge had 10.
“At this point in our season we have to do a little bit more to improve,” Kreider noted.
The Flivvers travel to Minocqua, Wis., tonight for a non-conference match and host Gladstone on Thursday in another league match.
