KINGSFORD — It was all Kingsford in a 81-42 non-conference romp against North Dickinson on Friday.

The Flivvers (1-0) were led by Luke Terrian’s 27 points while Tyler Beauchamp added 15 in their season opener.

“I was really happy with how we played as a really good unit out there. We saw each other really well,” Kingsford head coach Dan Olkkonen said. “You go through the preseason here and you have a couple practices and try to figure out the guys and what your strengths are. We really wanted to try to get our touches on the inside.”

North Dickinson (1-1) sputtered in most every aspect of the game, at times shellshocked by Kingsford’s fast tempo.

“They played a lot better than we did on offense,” North Dickinson head coach Chris Mattson said. “They played a lot better than we did on defense. They hustled to loose balls better than we did. They offensive rebounded better than we did. They defensive rebounded better than we did. There wasn’t a part better than they. We got smoked right from the get-go.”

Asked if he took away any positives from the game, Mattson unequivocally replied “not many.”

“You gotta put it behind you. We didn’t shoot very well,” Mattson said. “I thought our team kind of had our heads down in the second quarter. We got down by 15, 16 points. We weren’t hustling back on defense. More one on one offensively. We weren’t passing the ball. At that point I saw a little bit of a different attitude from my team.”

Despite being able to find any consistent rhythm, the Nordics were led by Matt Bruette’s 20 points. Cameron Schultz added 12 points and Quenten Ackerman had five.

The Flivvers found contributions from seven of their eight players. Kingsford’s tempo was spritely matched by a dominant presence around the rim. Andrew Mann set the tone early on with a commanding presence under the basket and finished with 10 points, including seven in the opening quarter. Cole Galeazzi grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and chipped in 12 points.

“We got kind of a big crew out there with Andrew Mann and Cole Galeazzi who played great in their roles tonight,” Olkkonen said. “Luke Terrian and Tyler. Those are four big kids and they want to try to get to the basket and they did that. When they collapsed on them, they made some nice passes out. Overall our percentage was good. I know we had a lot of layups, we ran the floor really well which was huge positive.”

For the Nordics, the loss was a setback from a two-point win over Bark River-Harris earlier in the week.

“Give Kingsford credit, they stuck on us in a pressure defense,” Mattson said. “We didn’t adjust to it very well. Some of the shots I saw us take were rushed. We got decent looks inside. I think we were too worried about the potential block instead of just going and playing your game and let the game fall where it may. Their defense was tough.”

Kingsford JV won 41-29.

Kingsford hosts Houghton on Tuesday. The Nordics’ home opener is Thursday, Dec. 6 against Carney-Nadeau.
