ScuttleBu(r)t … DCRA prez hints at others from NASCAR

Truck star Johnny Sauter may not be the only racer with NASCAR credentials returning to Norway Speedway in 2019.

Dickinson County Racing Association President John Ostermann confirmed that Sauter will be back to defend his title in the Island Resort and Casino’s Kent Pearson Memorial Stateline Challenge on July 5.

However, Norway Speedway’s marquee event “could possibly include another NASCAR driver or two,” according to Ostermann.

DCRA is coming off a successful season of stock car racing at Norway Speedway. Who’s responsible?

“It’s not one person or one group of people, it is all of us, every member of the Dickinson County Racing Association, every fan, every sponsor and every track worker,” Ostermann said.

Ostermann is a former well traveled high school basketball coach. He was right there with Paul Miller, Dan Schive and Stan Jesky in the quote department …

From Dwight Perry, Seattle Times: “Two nuns have been accused of embezzling about $500,000 from St. James Catholic School in Torrance, Calif., to support their gambling craze.

“Apparently they put too much money down on the Cardinals this season and not enough on the Saints.”

Former Detroit Lions defensive standout Luther Elliss stresses academics to his 12 children.

“Your body is only going to last so long, you’ve got to use that mind of yours,” Elliss told The Athletic.

Now the defensive line coach at the University of Idaho, Elliss didn’t start playing football until a sophomore in high school.

“Football’s a game you can pick up later in life,” Elliss said. “I’d rather see you play soccer, basketball, something where you have to have eye-hand coordination, you have to be able to see things while you’re looking around, scanning the field. All that helps you play football.”

Elliss, who once visited Iron River for a Fuel UP Play 60 program, adds that rule changes have helped make the game safer …

Quinnesec’s Brian Phillips, bowling in his second PBA senior tourney at Kankakee, Ill., practiced with bowling star Pete Weber.

Yours truly once interviewed Pete Weber’s dad, USBC Hall of Famer Dick Weber, at Iron River’s Riverside Lanes …

Delaware’s Nasir Adderley, one of the top defensive backs in the country, is the cousin of Packers great Herb Adderley.

“Growing up, I had dreams of going to the NFL,” Adderley told The Athletic. “I have it in my bloodlines.”

Merry Christmas, sports fans! …
