Boys basketball: IM routs Gwinn, 83-58

Wonders scores 30, Johnson has 26

GWINN — Iron Mountain made its presence known on the boards and wore down a smaller Gwinn team for an 83-58 Mid-Peninsula Conference boys basketball victory on Friday night.

The undefeated and UP No. 1 Mountaineers (9-0, 6-0) got 30 points from Foster Wonders and 26 from Marcus Johnson.

Tucker Taylor paced the Modeltowners (4-5) with 18 points, while Austin Forbes added 15 and James Harnick 11.

“The biggest thing was we gave up too many second-chance points,” said Gwinn coach Jim Finkbeiner. “They didn’t shoot really well early on, but they used their size — not just their height as they had about 30 pounds on every one of our guys — to get a lot of offensive rebounds.

“We played really hard against the No. 1 team in the U.P.”

Wonders grabbed 12 of the Mountaineers’ 35 rebounds and also tallied four assists. Wonders scored 11 third-quarter points when the Mountaineers pulled ahead 60-43. The sophomore also had four assists.

Johnson scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter.

“It was a physical and hard fought game,” said IM coach Bucky Johnson, citing his team’s rebounding (23 offensive) and free-throw shooting as keys. “Tucker Taylor is a tough player and a load down there. For the most part we did what we had to do.”

IM didn’t hurt its cause with a big advantage at the free throw line, making 20 of 24 (83 percent) to just 6 of 15 (40 percent) for Gwinn.

Iron Mountain travels to Kingsford on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers also won the JV game 53-45.
