College Golf: Eichhorn in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Hunter Eichhorn of Carney participated last weekend in the Patriot All-America Invitational at Wigwam Golf Club.

The Marquette University sophomore and reigning U.P. Golf Association men’s champion finished in a tie for 33rd among 84 entrants in the prestigious tournament that benefits the Fold of Honor Foundation, which offers scholarships and assistance to spouses and children of those killed or disabled while serving in the armed forces.

Eichhorn shot an 8-over 218 (77-70-71). Isaiah Jackson, a University of Memphis junior, won the tournament with a 5-under 205. Grand Valley State’s Alex Scott and Oklahoma’s Quade Cummins shared runner-up at 208.

Eichhorn represented Marine Corps Major Nicholas Ferencz III, a 1985 Marquette University graduate. Ferencz died in 2000 during a training exercise air collision at a Marine Corps air station in Yuma, Ariz.

Eichhorn’s golf bag at Marquette has borne the name of Ferencz the past two seasons.

Eichhorn is a three-time Player of the Week in the Big East Conference and this past spring won the Big East Conference championship and was the league’s freshman of the year.

Eichhorn, a four-time Upper Peninsula champion at Carney-Nadeau High School, is ranked 58th in the latest Golfstat NCAA Division I player ranking and is 70th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.

He had a team-best 71.27 average during the 2018 fall season and leads the Big East in that category.
