KINGSFORD — Gladstone knocked off Iron Mountain and Kingsford in a high school wrestling quad meet Thursday.

The Braves defeated the Mountaineers, 54-27, and host Flivvers, 51-18. Negaunee lost two matches on the night, falling to Iron Mountain, 48-25, and Kingsford, 42-28.

“Everyone wrestled tough,” said Kingsford head coach Darren Groleau, missing wrestlers at 189 and 215 pounds. “We had some green wrestlers, young wrestlers, come out there. They didn’t give up points. They didn’t get pinned. They went out there and fought.”

Gladstone’s Michael Brazeau (112), Hunter Solis (119), Adam Bruce (130), Devon Eickhoff (160) and Paul Barrios (189) had pins in the Kingsford match.

“Ethan Wilcox ran into Adam Bruce,” Groleau said of the Braves’ state-ranked wrestler. “Adam Bruce is strong.”

Kingsford’s points came on pins from Toby Wilcox (145), Trevor Povolo (171) and Eddie Cardew (285).

Groleau was impressed with August Early battling Gladstone’s Nick Dawson in a 9-7 setback at 125. Dawson had pinned Early twice previously this season.

“That was a big match for August,” Groleau said. “That was a huge confidence booster because he knows he can hang with him.

“Toby Wilcox went out there and did what he needed to do. Eddie had two great pins. We needed points from him.”

Early (125), Ethan Wilcox (130), Toby Wilcox (140), Logan Crago (171), Povolo (160) and Cardew (285) posted pins in the Negaunee match.

“Trevor Povolo has had some tough matches this year,” Groleau said. “Once we get him going he’ll be tough. Logan Crago is wrestling very well.”

Negaunee’s Leo Helppi (189) registered a pin and Corey Sansom (119) won by decision.

Pins from Dawson (125), Bruce (135), Cole Hansen (152), Eickhoff (160) and Cole Dawson (285) sent Gladstone past Iron Mountain.

“We don’t match up well with Gladstone,” said IM coach Cory McLaren, forfeiting four weight classes. “It’s hard to compete when your giving up 24 points in forfeits.

“Hopefully, we can get a couple guys back from injury soon.”

Bruce and Hansen both had first-period pins.

“I always enjoy watching Adam Bruce and Cole Hansen any time they step on the mat,” McLaren said of the Braves’ “very technical wrestlers.”

Iron Mountain’s Preston Roberts (145) had a pin in the opening seconds of his match against Gladstone. Caleb Burklund (215) notched a second-period fall.

In the Negaunee match, Mountaineers’ Parker Stroud (112), Isaac Manier (119), Trevor Malburg (125), Dow Dawson (140), Myles Carey (160) and Giovanni Colavecchi (285) had falls.

“I was really impressed with our first-year wrestlers,” McLaren said. “Myles Carey grinds every time he is on the mat and keeps improving.

“Freshman Isaac Manier has been a pleasant surprise this year. He has been such a soft spoken kid at practice but when he gets on the mat he turns it on and wrestles aggressive.”

Negaunee’s Finn Helppi won by decision and Leo Helppi (189) outlasted Burklund 7-4.

Iron Mountain (13-5) and Kingsford (8-3) wrestle Saturday i the Escanaba Elks Invitational.

“The upcoming Elks tournament should be a good sign to see where we stand with UP’s coming up,” McLaren said.
