Football: Flivvs’ Terrian part of Tech recruiting class

Luke Terrian starred at quarterback, running back and linebacker over the past two Kingsford High School football seasons.

Michigan Tech has other plans — tight end and H-back.

Terrian was among 36 student-athletes Wednesday signing national letters of intent to play football for the Huskies.

“Luke Terrian is a do-it-all athlete,” said MTU running backs coach Phil Milbrath, a former Norway High School star. “We feel like we can do a lot with his size and athleticism to create mismatches and we are excited to have him as part of our program.”

The Flivver team captain has earned All-Great Northern Conference at running back and linebacker and All-UP at running back. He did achieve All-GNC at tight end as a sophomore.

“Luke has a great combination of speed, power and smarts,” Kingsford Coach Chris Hofer said in an assessment for All-UP honors.

Milbrath noted that Terrian (6-foot-2, 225) also excels in football and baseball.

“Despite all of Terrian’s success athletically, his most impressive work comes in the classroom,” said Milbrath, citing the senior’s National Honor Society status and other academic laurels.

Terrian, who has been invited to the UP All-Star Game, plans to major in exercise science or pre-medicine at Michigan Tech.

Eight other UP players signed with MTU — Nathan Beckman, defensive back, Westwood; Alex Cannoot, defensive line, Marquette; Sam Gilles, fullback, Westwood; Theo Kumpula, tight end, Negaunee; Brendan LeClaire, kicker; Dollar Bay; Ethan Martysz, wide receiver; Marquette; Hunter Smith, wide receiver, Ishpeming; and Tucker Taylor, tight end, Gwinn.

Westwood offensive lineman Blake Hewitt has made a commitment to enroll at Michigan Tech and will be a part of the program as a preferred walk-on.

Michigan Tech’s entire incoming class includes 18 defensive players, 23 players on offense, and two specialists multi-positional players. Twenty-nine players hail from the state of Michigan.

“First off, I’d like to thank our staff for their hard work throughout the signing season,” Coach Steve Olson said.

Michigan Tech wrapped up the year 4-6, but claimed the Miner’s Cup for the ninth straight season with a 35-33 victory at rival Northern Michigan in week nine of the season.

The Huskies having been conditioning and lifting weights since returning from semester break. Tech will begin spring practices in late March, with the annual spring game coming up in April.
