Girls basketball: Braves best Flivvs

GLADSTONE — Sophomore forward Ahna Larson provided the Gladstone girls with a little bit of separation here Tuesday, helping them earn a 47-39 win over the Kingsford Flivvers.

Larson’s jump shot from top of the key gave the Braves a 36-28 cushion at the end of the third quarter of the Great Northern Conference finale for both teams.

“That was a big boost for Ahna and the team,” said Braves’ coach Andy Cretens. “That definitely set the tone for the fourth quarter, and I think it kind of deflated Kingsford at the time. Our defense has been outstanding. It has been our catalyst and that’s what has been getting us wins.”

Kingsford (9-7, 3-5) was still within six following a layup by senior Olivia Allen with four and a half minutes left to play. Gladstone, however, didn’t allow the Flivvers any closer.

“Their three at the end of the third quarter was a momentum crusher,” said Kingsford coach Lisa Harry. “We should have had the last possession, but we turned the ball over and they capitalized. We had a couple swings when we missed a bunny and they went downcourt and converted. There were a couple little things we didn’t do well enough.”

The Braves (9-8, 6-4 GNC) led 44-32 following a lay-in by sophomore center Megan Crow with 2:41 remaining, but Cretens wasn’t completely convinced it was over.

Crow finished with 20 points. Junior Maggie Strehlow led the Flivvers with 14.

“We were constantly trying to run things away from her (Crow),” Harry said. “She can take things away from you. It was one and done lot of times. It’s hard to pick up easy baskets when she’s in there. I thought we played well enough on defense, but struggled on offense. On some of our steals we couldn’t convert, which is a big part of not gaining momentum.”

Kingsford junior Brooke Kriegl, who scored 34 points in the first meeting, was limited to three free throws Tuesday.

The Braves committed 22 turnovers to Kingsford’s 16.

Gladstone, which dropped the JV game 42-23, hosts Iron Mountain Thursday. Kingsford hosts Ishpeming Thursday.
