FLORENCE, Wis. — Forest Park got the ball to the right girl and held off Florence 63-59 in a non-conference basketball game Monday.

Elle Soderberg scored three straight baskets and added a free throw in the final two minutes for the rusty Lady Trojans (7-4), who last played on Jan. 24 because of weather problems.

“Those shots that Elle took are her shots,” Forest Park coach Jackie Giuliani said of Soderberg’s marksmanship from around the free throw lane. “She makes those in practice and has made them in games before. Those are definitely shots that we want her taking.”

Florence (9-7), looking for possibly its first girls basketball win over Forest Park, held a 57-54 lead after Casandra Larson drained a triple with 2:05 showing. After a Soderberg basket cut the margin to one, Florence drove to the basket and lost the ball on a turnover.

“We were trying to pull the ball out and have them foul us but we ended up turning the ball over trying to force something,” said Florence coach Brad Perry. “We haven’t been in close games. We tried to hurry something that wasn’t there.”

Florence was held to just a Kathleen Selden free throw over the final two minutes. After Soderberg’s seventh straight point produced a 61-59 edge, Claudia Nocerini iced the contest with two free throw with seven seconds left.

Nocerini paced the Trojans with 18 points. Mercedes Simmons accounted for 17 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks and five steals. Soderberg and Destiny Ferarra combined for 16 points while Cassie Divine had six with 10 rebounds.

“I liked our good balanced scoring,” Giuliani said. “That was big. It’s hard to stop but they also had balance and that made them hard to stop.”

Larson led Florence with 17 points. Jenna Springer had 13 points with seven assists and five of the Bobcats’ 15 steals. Jordyn Springer and Selden each chipped in 10 points. Madison Neuens had four steals.

“They have a nice team and some great guards that create and penetrate,” Giuliani said.

Florence’s defensive strategy was geared to stopping the 6-foot-1 Simmons.

“We knew it would be a test with their size inside,” Perry said. “I thought we did a real good job with our post players. We got them in a little bit foul trouble in the first half. That helped us get to the free throw line. We were aggressive.”

Florence converted 16 of 26 free throws — 7 of 13 in the first half. Forest Park had 22 turnovers and Florence 20 in the game.

“It’s like starting the season over again,” Giuliani said of the lengthy break between games. “We shouldn’t have 22 turnovers in the middle of the season.

“You could tell we’re just not in game shape right now and that’s what we need to do is play some games. I’m hopeful with a couple games under our belt we’ll get back to where we were.”

Forest Park hosts Rapid River tonight and Florence entertains Three Lakes on Thursday for Senior Night.

Lacey Enders’ 22 points led Florence past Forest Park 41-30 in the junior varsity game. Haley Behrmann chipped in 10 points. Lea LaChapelle had 14 for the Trojans.
