NIAGARA, Wis. — Niagara got through its first postseason test with a 67-39 win over Goodman-Pembine in the Division 5 regional semifinal Tuesday.

The Badgers (16-5) were led by Jessica Oratch’s 21 points and Jaida Maki’s 20 points.

Katelyn Morrison’s 13 points led the Patriots (3-17).

Niagara hosts Elcho (14-7) on Friday.

“First round of the playoffs, you always wanna play well. We played pretty well. There’s always room for improvement,” Niagara head coach Karl Lamoreaux said. “I’m happy we got a nice win on our home floor. Oratch and Maki were both in the 20s and both had 12 rebounds. Pretty pleased with how everything went. It’s nice having two girls with 20. It’s hard stopping a team when more than one girl can score. And we have several that can score.”

Oratch scored 14 of her points in the first half, while Maki scored 18 of hers in the second half. Lamoreaux said Maki’s emergence in the second half came from the Patriots’ effort to contain Oratch. Goodman-Pembine’s Katelyn Nelson also fell into foul trouble and later fouled out.

On defense, Lamoreaux said the main emphasis was containing Morrison.

“We didn’t want Morrison to drive. She ended up being able to drive,” Lamoreaux said. “She got to the free-throw line 11 times, so we fouled her quite a bit. We didn’t allow a whole bunch of open shots. We rotated well on defense to try and cover some shooters. She got a few drives in and we did foul her. But she does that against everybody. She’s that good of a girl.”

Lamoreaux said he anticipates a good game against Elcho.

“Very well coached team. Very drilled and disciplined,” he said. “They have one really standout guard, (Katie) Slowik. She averages about 19 points a game. They got a couple other girls that can score. They’re up at about eight or nine points per game. They have some size but they’re young. Hopefully if we come to play we can take care of business. If we don’t come to play we can certainly go home unhappy.”
