IM’s Stroud, Burklund armed with district titles

MUNISING — District champions Parker Stroud and Caleb Burklund along with seven other Iron Mountain wrestlers are off to the MHSAA Division 4 individual regional in Charlevoix.

In Saturday’s district, Stroud captured the 112-pound title while Burklund claimed 189-pound honors.

“I am thrilled to see this many make it to regionals,” said IM Coach Cory McLaren. “Last year we only sent one so this will be exciting for the team.”

Stroud (29-9), ranked 10th in Michigan Grappler’s Division 4 state rankings, pinned Westwood’s Joe Derocha in the finals.

Stroud needed just 26 seconds to pin St. Ignace’s Matt Valletta in the semifinals.

Burklund (37-6) pinned St. Ignace’s Caleb Brown for the district title. He also pinned Austin Kleiman of Bark River-Harris in the semifinals.

“Everyone on this team came out to wrestle and it showed on the mats,” McLaren said. “I was worried how they would do after a long bus drive up to Munising at 5 a.m.”

The Mountaineers also qualified Trevor Malburg at 125 pounds, second with a 1-1 record and one pin; Dow Dawson at 130, second with a 2-1 record and two pins; Tre Sabotta at 135, second with a 2-1 record and two pins; Jon Carrion at 145, second with a 2-1 record and one; Isaac Manier at 119, fourth with a 2-2 record; Preston Roberts at 140, fourth with a 2-2 record and two pins; and Giovanni Colavecchi at 285, fourth with a 2-2 record and two pins.

Malburg was edged by Onaway’s Joey Galvez 12-10 in the finals.

The once-postponed team districts will start tonight with Iron Mountain hosting Bark River-Harris at 5 p.m. The winner advances to St Ignace on Wednesday to face Onaway in the regionals. The host Saints and Westwood are on the other side of the bracket.
