Wrestling: Stroud leads IM to individual state finals

CHARLEVOIX — Freshman Parker Stroud will lead Iron Mountain into the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals at Ford Field.

In Saturday’s Division 4 regional, Stroud decisioned Kyle Corcoran of Mancelona 9-2 for the 112-pound title. Stroud (32-9) defeated Ethan Winegardner of Roscommon in the quarterfinals and Matthew Treiber of Leroy Pine River in the semifinals, both by pins in the first period.

Three other Mountaineers along with Kingsford’s Trevor Povolo will join Stroud in the March 1-2 MHSAA Individual Finals.

Iron Mountain’s Caleb Burklund (39-7) was runner-up at 189 pounds, falling to Whittemore-Prescott’s Ridge Schutte by technical fall. Burklund pinned Leroy Pine River’s Elijah Carper in the quarterfinals and decisioned Ishpeming’s Andre Walsh 7-2 in the semifinals.

Mountaineers’ Tre Sabotta (31-11 record at 135 pounds) and Jon Carrion (29-15 at 145) each placed third at the regional and earned state berths.

In the Division 3 individual regional at Kalkaska, Povolo (31-6) placed third at 160 pounds. The senior pinned Joe Orfe of Benzie Central in the first period to advance to state.

Povolo, edged 3-2 in the semifinals by once-beaten Bryson Jensen of Manistee, won on a tech fall in the quarterfinals and 7-0 decision in the consolation semifinals.
