Boys basketball: Johnson, Wonders named MPC co-players of the year
Duo leads IM to undefeated regular season
NEGAUNEE — Sophomore Foster Wonders and junior Marcus Johnson have provided a potent 1-2 punch for top-ranked Iron Mountain all season, leading them to the Mid-Peninsula Conference title at 14-0.
They were rewarded for their efforts Monday, selected co-Players of the Year in the Mid-Peninsula Conference during the annual meeting of the league’s coaches.
Gladstone senior Reece Castor, who averaged 22.5 points a game in the MPC, earned first-team honors.
Other first-team selections include Negaunee junior Jason Waterman, Gwinn senior Tucker Taylor, Westwood senior Nathan Beckman and Ishpeming senior Gavin Sundberg.
Gladstone senior Carson Shea, averaging nearly 11 points, landed a second-team berth.
Additional second-team picks included Iron Mountain seniors Jaden Vicenzi and Charlie Gerhard, Negaunee juniors Jakson Sager and Drew Lindberg, Gwinn senior Austin Forbes and Westwood senior Blake Hewitt.
Vicenzi, Taylor, Sundberg, Negaunee junior Drew DuShane and Westwood senior Zach Niemi were selected to the all-defensive team.
Receiving honorable mention were Ishpeming’s Darius Yoho, Gladstone’s Jared Crow, Manistique’s Kanton Lauzon, Iron Mountain’s Tony Feira and Westwood’s Ty Alderton.
