The Mountaineers (5-4) won the first game 13-1 and the second game 10-3.

Calumet (0-2), playing for the first time outside, got its first hit of the season by Rylan Anderson, a first-pitch double in the fifth inning to deep right-center field.

But the Copper Kings also made 12 errors on the day.

“It was our first time outside. We got a lot of room for improvement,” Calumet head coach Dave Yeo said. “They seemed to get better in the second game. They’re a good hitting team.”

Iron Mountain’s bats also fervently tested the Copper Kings’ defense. The Mountaineers had 20 hits in 12 innings.

Bryce Pietrantonio hit a combined 3 for 6 with five RBIs. Gavin Goulette 2 for 3 with three RBIs. CJ Bolo had four singles and four RBIs.

“The kids hit well. Good defense. We’re working towards districts like we’ve been saying,” Iron Mountain co-head coach Paul Julian said. “This was Calumet, they have a nice team. They’ve always had a nice team. This is their first outing on the field. I feel for them. We went through our first time on the field beginning of the year.”

Calumet scored its first run in the second inning on a fielder’s choice.

Calumet held close with Iron Mountain in the second game until the Mountaineers burst through with a five-run fifth inning.

The Copper Kings had four hits in the second game. Dan Tarnowski had two singles, Peter Larson singled and Tom Voelker singled.

The Mountaineers juggled pitching throughout the day with Brent Aman, Eli Lofholm, Caleb Evosevich-Hynes and Will Strand.

Strand, making his first appearance on the mound of the season in the second game, went four innings and gave up two hits while striking out three.

Aman struck out five and gave up three hits in five innings of work.

“We’re in the back end of our pitching. Kids stepped up. Offense was clear, quite a bit. Scoring 13 runs the first game and 10 runs the second game. It was awfully nice,” Iron Mountain co-head coach Ed Felten said. “Will Strand did a nice job — all of our pitchers did an excellent job. Will came in and pitched four solid innings and let our defense do what it does. It’s one of those things where we talk about the roles being defined and the opportunities being presented. It really is great to see the team gel together. No doubt the kids learned from it.”

The Mountaineers play a doubleheader on Saturday in Niagara. Iron Mountain plays Niagara at 11 a.m. and Norway at 1 p.m. Calumet plays at Eagle River today.
