Girls Golf: Flivvers sticking with basics

KINGSFORD — The goals of Kingsford High School girls golf coach Jean Constantini have not changed.

Swing fundamentals, basic rules and proper etiquette remain staples of the program.

“Golf is a complicated game and a life-long sport, so I want to make it fun so the girls stick with it for life,” Constantini said. “Winning a few matches along the way adds to the excitement, but is not the primary focus.”

Kingsford finished third in 2018 Great Northern Conference team points.

Four-year team member Haley Gabriel consistently hit in the low 50s during the latter part of the season. She wound up seventh in GNC individual points last year.

Kate Cook, in her third year of golf, should also be a GNC medal contender, according to Constantini.

“Kate is a long-ball hitter as well as a decent putter, so that should translate to low scores,” Constantini said.

Freshman Maggie Menghini is the daughter of local golf standout Paul Menghini.

“Maggie has been playing golf with her father for a number of years,” Constantini said. “I can already see some of that greatness has been transferred from father to daughter. She also is a long-ball hitter who has great ball contact.”

Constantini said “Cheyenne Moyer has a really nice swing and should do well this season.”

“Mallory Early, Anna Murvich and Christy Glodowski are all fairly new to golf,” Constantini added. “I am hoping to get them some playing time on the golf course.”

The Flivvers play their first GNC meet Monday in Menominee. They recently played a practice round there.

“We have been hitting balls into nets indoors for a couple of weeks,” Constantini said. “We recently started practicing outdoors in the field behind the stadium.”
