GLADSTONE — The Gladstone tennis team ran into a tough Kingsford squad, falling 7-1 in its home opener here Thursday.

Jimmer Maki and Everett Arts combined for the lone Braves’ win, winning the No. 4 doubles match against Kingsford’s Brady Kopp and Cole Bracket 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

“We had a good victory at No. 4 doubles with Jimmer Maki and Everett Arts,” Braves’ coach Dan Williams said. “Jimmer was serving very well today and was hitting some great forehands. Everett was very consistent with his lobbing and keeping the ball in play. They worked well together as a team.”

Williams was happy with the play of Colby Torvinen, who fell 6-0, 4-6 in No. 3 singles.

“Singles saw some improvement at No. 3 with Colby,” Williams said. “He had a rough first set, but started playing much more consistently in the second and was not overhitting as much, which really helped him to get into the match.”

Kingsford hosts Negaunee on Monday.
