QUINNESEC — Kingsford held off a late push by rival Iron Mountain for a 5-3 win on Thursday.

The Flivvers (5-11) were helped by Ben Stanish’s strong performance on the mound. He threw 101 pitches across six innings and struck out eight while walking three. He gave up three runs on four hits.

“I thought Ben pitched really well. We played good defense,” Kingsford head coach Chad Lindeman said. “We hit the ball in crucial situations. We just played solid baseball. I commend Iron Mountain too because they’re a much better team this year. A much better team. This is a fun game for us and everybody to play. I really think that it’s a good game.”

Kingsford held a 5-1 lead after the fourth inning, then Bryce Pietrantonio hit a two-run home run in the sixth that brought the Mountaineers within two.

But Luke Terrian took the mound in the seventh and shut the door on Iron Mountain to preserve the win. He threw 15 pitches.

Iron Mountain picked up two hits in the seventh by Brent Aman and Ian Anderson, but runners never made it to second and the game ended with Kingsford making outs on a strikeout, pickoff and flyout.

“I expected it to be a very tight scoring game today,” Iron Mountain co-head coach Paul Julian said. “They’re a good ball club. They’ve always been.”

Caleb Johnson threw 79 pitches over four innings for Iron Mountain and was just as effective on the mound as Stanish was for Kingsford. Johnson gave up six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Brent Aman pitched the rest of the way for Iron Mountain and gave up one hit with a walk and a strikeout. He threw 19 pitches.

An Iron Mountain error in the third allowed two runs to score, giving Kingsford a 3-1 lead.

Terrian doubled and singled for the Flivvers. Stanish, Noah Wilcox, Carter Kreski, Colin Erickson and Trevor Povolo had singles.

“We had some big hits,” Lindeman said. “We had them down 5-1 and then Bryce hit that two-run shot. He hit the snot out of that ball. It was a good well played game by both sides. I like the fact that we all try to get along.”

Anderson, Aman and Blake Julian singled for Iron Mountain. Pietrantonio had a single to go along with his homer.

“Nice to see Pietrantonio hit his two-run home run to get us closer,” Felten said.

Iron Mountain hosts the West PAC tournament starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, while Kingsford plays against Lakeland in Minocqua, Wisconsin.
