ScuttleBu(r)t …

North Dickinson star Todd Lindeman did indeed dunk on Kingsford Coach Dan Olkkonen during the 1991 Class D regional basketball tournament at NMU’s CB Hedgcock Fieldhouse.

Lindeman mentioned the feat during his induction speech at the 48th UP Sports Hall of Fame ceremony.

“I do remember big Todd that night,” the Flivvers coach and former White Pine standout said of the Nordics’ 7-foot star.

In regional semifinals, ND beat Ewen-Trout Creek 77-69 and WP defeated Big Bay 73-63. North Dickinson knocked off White Pine 68-47 for the quarterfinal berth.

“Todd was the tallest player I played against in my entire career both high school and college,” said Olkkonen, who went on to play at NMU with Iron Mountain’s Matt Wonders. “He was very intimidating to try to match up with a guy that big. He really changed the game especially on the defensive side.”

Olkkonen recalls his Warriors leading the Nordics after the first quarter.

“The Nordics had a great supporting group around the big guy,” Olkkonen said. “And, yes, I was under the hoop on the dunk. Great guys on that team.”

Added Olkkonen, “Win or lose, all good memories.

I understand Lindeman also dunked on former Norway coach Ben Leiker in the 1988 regionals when the Nordics nicked the Warriors 78-65.

Lindeman, who scored 52 points in the two 1991 regional games, earned the tournament’s CV Red Money Outstanding Player Award. Lindeman led the all-tournament team with the likes of Olkkonen and Mike Skoviak of White Pine, ND’s Chad Lindeman and future WIC girls basketball coach Eric Shamion …
