MHSAA’s revised football playoff points system came a year too late for Kingsford.

According to Mick McCabe of the Detroit Free Press, Kingsford’s 4-5 record in 2018 would have been good enough for the new playoff format.

“Beginning in the fall of 2020, a team’s strength of schedule will be the overriding determination of whether a school is in or out of the 256-team playoff field,” McCabe wrote. “More importantly, it rewards a school even if it loses to a quality opponent.”

Rockford’s Ericka VanderLende, the future University of Michigan distance runner with family ties to Crystal Falls, reached a goal this month in the Shepherd Blue Jay Invite.

VanderLende, daughter of Forest Park grad Ingrid (Peterson) and Greg VanderLende, hoped to break 10 minutes this season in the 3200-meter run. She did just that in an elite field, posting a 9:57.01 against two of her future Michigan teammates.

Ericka’s mom, daughter of Dave and Arlene Peterson of Crystal Falls, said that time broke a state record and ranks second in the nation.
