Tennis: Kingsford beats IM, 7-1

KINGSFORD — Kingsford knocked off rival Iron Mountain 7-1 in boys tennis Thursday.

In other matches Thursday, Negaunee defeated Kingsford 6-2 and Iron Mountain 8-0.

“Negaunee is a tough team and we knew that going in,” said Coach Sarah Massie, whose Flivvers collected three-set wins from No. 3 singles Caleb Boone and No. 4 Pablo Cano. “I was excited for Caleb and Pablo. They both had to dig in and fight through a third set. It was awesome to see them play as well as they did today with GNC’s and UP’s on the horizon.”

Iron Mountain’s point against Kingsford came at No. 4 singles where Michael Colavecchi downed Cano 7-6 (2), 6-4.

“We had a good match against some tough competition,” said IM Coach Tony Tatangelo. “Several of the boys did very well with long volleys and several deuce points. Today we got a lot of experience and the kids saw a lot of court time.”

Tatangelo said Colavecchi and Cano played a “long two-set set match.”

“I give both the boys credit as it was over two hours to complete the two sets,” Tatangelo said. “Ryan Hakamaki (No. 1 singles) played well against both of his opponents with good shot placement and court awareness.”

The Mountaineers have been playing all of their matches on the road with Amos Marston’s Eastside Courts under repair.

“We’re a young team that’s putting in the time and working hard,” Tatangelo said. “They have all came a long way since the beginning of the season, especially with the bad weather we have had preventing us from practices.”
