Norway’s Cavagnetto places first at Stephenson Invitational cross country

BANAT — Adam Cavagnetto had every reason to be happy with his performance here Thursday.

The Norway sophomore earned top honors in the Stephenson Invitational cross country meet, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 52.4 seconds on this warm and humid day, less than 24 hours after western Menominee County received about five inches of rain.

“The race went real good,” he said. “The Marquette guys were pushing the pace. We do a lot of trail running in Norway, which I think helped me today. It was a great race. Everybody ran well. The heat was a factor, although it cooled off a little for our race. It wasn’t too bad.”

Marquette junior Moses Waite was runner-up (18:02.4), followed by teammates Hogan Nemetz (18:32.7), Peyton Osborne (18:41.1) and Menominee’s Hunter Shepeck (18:41.2).

Kingsford’s Luke Ruble placed 11th (19:12.2) and Norway’s Jeff Vanholla was 21st (21:10.4). Seth Axley was Florence’s pacesetter in 29th (21:58.1) and Luke Gorzinski was North Central’s leader in 34th (23:05.7).

The Marquette boys, who grabbed seven of the top 10 places, won with 24 points. They were followed by Menominee 57, Stephenson 107, Rapid River 118 and Norway 129.

Marquette’s girls also won with 34 points, followed by Kingsford 74, Menominee 76, Mid Peninsula 93 and Stephenson 143.

“It didn’t start out real well for us,” said Kingsford coach Dan Carey. “One of our girls got the flu right before the start. Overall, we’re in a good start. We just need to get everybody on the same page.”

Mid Pen junior Daisy Englund won the girls’ race at 21:30.5, followed by Kingsford junior Melanie Wenzel (21:43.3), Marquette junior Josie Danieklewicz (22:16), Menominee’s Hayden Buck (22:19) and Marquette’s Reegan Ketzenberger (22:26.3).

“It was a very tough day to run,” said Englund. “The course wasn’t bad, it was just way too hot. This was my first time running this course. I didn’t know what to expect. There were a few hills, which made it a little hard. It was a relief to see the finish line. I’m just glad we all finished and got through it.”

Wenzel had similar thoughts about the weather conditions.

“The heat and humidity definitely was a factor,” she said. “After the first mile, you could feel the humidity playing a factor. The first Mid Pen girl was very good. She definitely pushed me and I tried to catch up. The times were good for the conditions.”

Kingsford’s Sarah Kulas took eighth (22:36.4), Florence’s Faith Neuens was 18th (24:46.9), followed by Kingsford’s Gabby Carey in 21st (25:08.3) and Norway’s Taylor Adams in 22nd (25:16.1).
