Prep football previews: Mountaineers return home, looking for 4-0 start

Florence home, aiming for 5-0

IRON MOUNTAIN - The undefeated Mountaineers (3-0) welcome Norway (1-2) to Mountaineer Stadium Friday night at 6 p.m. for a WestPAC crossover game.

Meeting one another on the gridiron annually, going back to the 1930s, this rivalry separated by approximately 10 miles has seen the Mountaineers get the best of the Knights for most of the last two decades. Iron Mountain, holding its homecoming this week, hopes to stay unbeaten on the season.

The 1-2 Knights, hit the road for the second time on the season, which saw them win Week 2 at Munising, 14-0. They dropped home contests to Lake Linden-Hubbell and Ishpeming. While the Mountaineers have won their last two games in a convincing fashion, Week 1 saw them earn a hard- fought 17-14 win over Negaunee.

NORTH DICKINSON (0-3) AT STEPHENSON (0-3), Tonight, 6:30 p.m. – Great Lakes Conference West Division 8-player

Both teams come in winless thus far on the season, so something has to give. The 2017 season was the first with 8-man football for both teams. Stephenson won the 2018 matchup at the James D. Priestap Field in Felch 54-13. The Nordics coming off of a long trip to Brimley, are faced with having to travel on a short week. Their lone home game so far on the season was Week 2 versus Cedarville, after traveling to Superior Central Week 1. Head coach Logan Carlson and his Eagles of Stephenson have struggled offensively through three games.

WEST IRON COUNTY (3-0) AT CALUMET (3-0), Friday, 6 p.m. – (WestPAC crossover)

In what used to be an annual matchup in the old WestPAC Conference, this game of unbeaten teams is a crossover game in the new 16-team WestPAC Football Conference. West Iron head coach Mike Berutti has not had to travel to Calumet since 2016, hosting the Copperkings and head coach John Croze for two consecutive seasons. These teams have split the last two matchups, with Calumet winning last year’s encounter 43-6. The Wykons have won their first three games by at least 15 points, while Calumet was pushed to the limit by Westwood last week, coming away with a 14-8 win.

KINGSFORD (1-2, 0-0) AT GLADSTONE (2-1, 0-1), Friday, 6 p.m. – Great Northern Conference

The Kingsford Flivvers and head coach Mark Novara open up their conference schedule with their third road game of the young season. At 1-2 thus far, Kingsford’s lone win came Week 2 at Shiocton, Wis., and the Flivvers come in to this week’s game, owning a 37-11 all-time record against Gladstone. The Braves suffered their first loss of the season last week at the hands of Great Northern Conference powerhouse Menominee. Gladstone got off to a 2-0 start by defeating St. Ignace and Gaylord to launch the 2019 campaign.

NORTH CENTRAL (3-0) AT ONTONAGON (0-3), Friday, 6 p.m. – Great Lakes Conference West Division 8-player

Coming off a win versus No. 1 ranked Pickford Saturday at home, the North Central Jets and second year coach Leo Gorzinski head west to face winless Ontonagon. The Jets are riding high at 3-0, while the Gladiators have struggled in their three losses on the season.

NEWBERRY (3-0) AT FOREST PARK (2-1), Friday, 6 p.m. – non-conference 8-player

The Newberry Indians’ first season of 8-man play, has been successful thus far. After taking a Week 1 forfeit win from Wolverine of the northern Lower Peninsula, their independent schedule has them making their second consecutive trip to the western U.P., this time on a short week after traveling to Ontonagon last Saturday where they defeated the host Gladiators 46-6. They defeated Stephenson Week 2 for their first home win of the season. Forest Park, having scored 140 points in the last two games, hosts its third consecutive home game this week. This is the third non-conference game for the Trojans, all three being against teams from the eastern end of the U.P. Pickford, the Trojans only loss thus far on the season, was a Week 1 road game, and they then hosted Rudyard Week 2, winning 60-0. Last week’s 80-40 scoring barrage came against Superior Central.

GILLETT (2-2) AT FLORENCE (4-0, 3-0), Friday, 7 p.m. – 8-player

Having outscored their opponents 210-14 through four games thus far this season, the Bobcats and head coach Kent Walstrom welcome Gillett to Robert Landry Field in Florence. Gillett has dropped games against Gibraltar and Algoma so far in 2019, while defeating Wausaukee and Lena-STAA. , all four Marinette-Oconto-Northern-Lakes-Packerland Conference foes. The Bobcats have defeated Gibraltar, Wausaukee, Three Lakes and 2018 defending WIAA 8-player State Champion Sevastopol to come in to this week’s matchup undefeated.
