Trojans smother Newberry, 58-14

Ron Deuter/The Daily News Newberry running back Carter Smithson is swallowed up by a swarm of Forest Park tacklers Friday evening at Dick Mettlach Field.

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park handed Newberry its first loss in eight-player football Friday, rolling to a 58-14 non-conference win behind three rushing touchdowns apiece by Gabe Scarlassara and CJ Post.

“We played more of complete game,” said Trojans (3-1) coach Dave Graff. “We’re getting a little more polished but we still have a long way to go.”

Scarlassara ran for 172 yards on 26 carries at Dick Mettlach Field. Post totaled 62 yards on 13 trips and collected an eight-yard TD pass from Tommy Peltoma. Mason Rintala added 65 rushing yards on nine carries.

Forest Park led 52-0 at halftime even though the Indians came in with a 3-0 record.

“Our offensive line played strong,” said Graff, citing the work of Bryce Smithson, Evan Hedtke, Tommy Showers and Timmy Bendick. “Our backs are starting to run downhill a little bit.”

Peltoma completed 4 of 7 passes for 46 yards.

Defensively, Hedtke, Peltoma and Jacobi Hill had fumble recoveries, with Hill also snagging an interception. Scarlassara forced a fumble and Gabe Smith was among the leading tacklers.

Forest Park is at Carney-Nadeau on Friday.
