Boys Soccer — Mountaineers end season with victory at Houghton

HOUGHTON — The Iron Mountain closed out the 2019 season with a 4-1 win on a wet and windy night Monday, Oct. 21.

The Mountaineers were led by strong performances from seniors Ryan Hakamaki, Michael Colavecchi, Kyle Benjamin, and Chuck Tomasevic. Hakamaki, Colavecchi, and Benjamin all scored goals in their final high school game.

“Our seniors have demonstrated great leadership not just tonight, but all season. They have set a great example for our younger players, and have helped them to develop into really good soccer players”, said coach Joe Pacheco.

The Mountaineers took an early lead on a crossing pass from Dylan Wolsker to Larry Person, who was able to tap it in from close range. Late in the first half, Colavecchi scored on a long wind-aided shot into the left corner of the net to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Houghton responded with a short-range shot off a corner kick to cut the advantage to 2-1. Hakamaki scored from short range off a nice cross from Wolsker to regain the two-goal advantage at 3-1. With 5 minutes left, the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick, which goalkeeper Benjamin scored to make it 4-1.

The Mountaineers finished the season by winning seven or their last nine games, and finished with a record of 8-6-1. Coach Pacheco added, “We are proud of our athletes for the sportsmanship they have displayed throughout the season. We also appreciate the sportsmanship displayed by the players from Houghton”.

Coach Pacheco also thanked his assistant coaches Steve Juul, Erik Kleiman, and Greg Kulas for their help this season.
