Emeralds slip past Norway, 19-14

MANISTIQUE — Schyler Andersen’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:34 remaining lifted Manistique to a 19-14 win over Norway in a West PAC Iron Division game Friday.

The Knights, who had held a 14-13 lead since the first quarter, got into Manistique territory but an Andersen interception ended the potential game-winning drive.

“Penalties killed us,” said Norway coach Scott Popp, his Knights flagged for 95 yards. “We showed a lot of heart,” he added.

Norway’s workhorse running back Isaac Hautamaki was sidelined by a first-half ankle injury.

The Knights (2-6,-2-4) hit paydirt in the first quarter on a 1-yard Gannon Bray plunge, capping an 11-play drive. Ethan Sabotta’s 9-yard run and Nathan Paulitch’s extra-point kick gave the Knights a one-point lead, offsetting 77- and 71-yard TD runs by Andersen.

Norway, playing with just two reserves, kept Andersen in check until the Emeralds gained possession late in the fourth quarter and drove 30 yards for the winning score.

“We got a bounce at the end and put together our best drive,” Emeralds coach Todd Kangas said. “That was probably the best drive we had all night.”

Bray completed 5 of 9 passes for 107 yards, including 56- and 31-yard completions to Kody Hendricks — the latter coming on fourth and 30 on the Knights’ final possession. Bray also picked off an Emeralds pass.

Andersen finished with 192 yards rushing on 26 carries for Manistique (3-5, 3-3).
