Flivvers bow in GNC volleyball semifinal

GLADSTONE — The Marquette Redettes continued their stranglehold on the Great Northern Conference here Saturday, capturing the GNC volleyball tournament with a 2-0 (25-18, 25-23) win over Escanaba in the championship game.

The Redettes (32-2-3), who have yet to drop a conference game this season, were tested early and often by Escanba before taking the title.

Esky topped Kingsford 2-0 in the semifinals and Marquette blanked Menominee 2-0. Gladstone was eliminated before bracket play after finishing last in pool play.

“It was actually fun to get different kids in today, but I think at the same time our captains and experienced players that are still on the floor have a lot that they can learn from to overcome adversity,” Flivvers head coach Jaclynn Kreider said. “Greatness really comes from overcoming failure and adversity, and we really made sure that was our focus today. It’s a challenge and it was a struggle at times, but I thought overall there was a lot of good that came out of today.”

The Eskymos opened the day with a 25-20 win over Marquette in pool play — the first time the Redettes lost a set in 41 tries.

Escanaba hosts Kingsford Tuesday, while Marquette hosts Gladstone.
