Flivvs rip Red Wing

(Theresa Proudfit/The Daily News) Kingsford’s Caleb Boone looks for room to run during Friday night’s game at Flivver Field. Boone scored two touchdowns in Kingsford’s 41-6 victory.

KINGSFORD — On a night where there was plenty of distractions, positive distractions, but distractions nonetheless, the Kingsford Flivvers and head coach Mark Novara took care of business on the field, defeating the Red Wing Wingers 41-6 Friday at Flivver Field.

It was Veterans Night, where the Athletic Booster Club hosted area veterans, by admitting them and one guest into the game free of charge. The vets were given a special seating area with a small set of bleachers in the corner of the north end zone.

Prior to the start of the game, the Kingsford players and coaches honored a former teammate, student and friend in Jacey Riley.

Riley passed away tragically a couple of years ago. Two of the Flivver players carried a No. 24 jersey out to the field, in a manner where it was displayed to the crowd as a tribute to their former teammate.

“Jacey was a great kid, who came from a great family. We were glad to be able to honor him in the way in which we did tonight,” said Novara.

The game started off slow for both teams, with the offenses gaining very little yardage on their first two possessions. The Wingers fumbled on their second possession, and it was recovered by Carter Kreski of the Flivvers. After seven plays, the Flivvers punted.

Ben Standish’s punt pinned the Wingers deep in their own zone. Two plays into Red Wing’s ensuing drive Carter Stanchina stepped in front of quarterback Cooper Chandler’s pass and returned it 10-yards for a touchdown. Logan Normand added the extra point to make it 7-0 home team.

On Red Wing’s next drive, punter Henry Davig completed a 45-yard pass on a fake for a first down. Four plays later, on fourth and five, Chandler

threw a pass that Caleb Boone made a great play on and returned the intercepted pass 77 yards for a touchdown. Normand added the extra point to extend the Kingsford lead to 14-0.

Four plays into the Wingers’ next drive, on first and 10, Stanchina made another great play, stepping in front of a Red Wing pass for his second interception of the first half.

“Our defense made some big plays for us again tonight. The two returned INT’s were huge” said Novara.

Three plays later, Boone scored again, this time on a six-yard run. Normand added his third extra point to make it 21-0 Flivvers. The Kingsford defense forced another three and out by the Red Wing offense.

A seven-play drive, with Lance Waise running the ball on all seven plays, ended with a two-yard Waise touchdown run. Normand’s fourth extra point of the game extended the Kingsford lead to 28-0, which was the halftime score.

The annual halftime light and fireworks show that the Kingsford band and Music Booster Club puts on was spectacular, well organized and performed in a nearly flawless manner.

A Red Wing squib kick to begin the second half gave the Flivvers excellent field position. Three plays into the drive, Kingsford quarterback Tyler Kopp connected with Hunter Bilgreen for a 38-yard touchdown on first and 10 to extend the Kingsford lead to 34-0.

The Wingers fumbled the ensuing kickoff around midfield, and it was recovered and returned by Boone to the 11 yard-line of Red Wing. Two plays later, Normand reached the end zone on a two-yard run. He added the extra point to extend the Flivvers’ lead to 41-0.

Red Wing added a late touchdown on a seven-yard run by Kaleb Hove.

The Flivvers totaled 210 yards of combined offense on the night, 146 rushing and 64 passing. Stanchina added eight tackles to go along with his interceptions. Waise also intercepted a pass.

“We didn’t get our running game going like we’d have hoped to tonight. Other than that it was a great overall night, with veterans night, the light show, and a final home game win,” said Novara. “We have a lot to play for yet, we could share the conference title with Escanaba. We’ve also got a chance for a home playoff game, so two big games remain for us, we gotta get after it.”

The Flivvers now 4-3 on the season, hit the road for their remaining two games. Next week, they head to Menominee to face their longtime conference rival at Walton Blesch Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. for the Maroons’ homecoming and parents Night.

Prior to the varsity game, the Kingsford freshmen team defeated Red Wing JV team 26-8.
