IM earns top seed for football playoffs

IRON MOUNTAIN — The 9-0 Iron Mountain Mountaineers clinched the West PAC Conference Copper Division championship with their victory Friday night over Gogebic. Head coach Robin Marttila and his team have earned one of the four No. 1 seeds in Division 7 of the MHSAA Football Playoffs. IM is the only U.P. team in Division 7.

The Mountaineers, with 91.556 playoff points, would remain at home through the first three rounds of the playoffs. But first things first, a matchup with the 5-4 Mancelona Ironmen out of the Northern Michigan Football League Conference-Leaders Division. These team have never faced one another, but the Ironmen aren”t a stranger to having to come to the U.P. for the playoffs.

Mancelona has faced Manistique, Norway, Ishpeming and Forest Park in the postseason, last making the playoffs in 2014. That year was also the most recent winning season for the Ironmen. The winner of IM and Mancelona would face the winner of Harbor Springs at Charlevoix in round No. 2 of Region 1, District 1. A noon kickoff on Saturday is scheduled at Mountaineer Stadium.

Lake Linden – Hubbell (6-3) No. 3 Seed at West Iron (7-2) No. 2 Seed, Saturday at 1 p.m. – Division 8 Region 1, District 1

In what will be a Week 6 of the regular season rematch, these teams will play at Nelson Field in Stambaugh Saturday, instead of at Warner Field in Lake Linden. The Week 6 matchup was won by the Wykons 24-16 and head coach Mike Berutti. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between these teams, and the second in the postseason.

Back in 2017, LL-H also traveled to WIC for a round 1 playoff game. The Wykons were victorious that day 35-26, as well as defeating the Lakes and head coach Andy Crouch in the 2018 regular season 26-6. The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 4 seed Bark River-

Harris at No. 1 seed Ishpeming in Round 2.

Forest Park (7-2) No. 4 Seed at North Central (9-0) No. 1 Seed, Friday, 6 p.m., 8-player, Division 2, Region 1, District 1

In another Week 6 rematch this game was played in a steady rain and was won by the host Jets 34-8. These team have faced one another in Round 1 of the playoffs the last two season, with Forest Park and head coach David Graff coming away victorious in both matchups. In 2016, the Jets defeated FP in the second round of the 8-player playoffs.

NC and the Pickford Panthers, who host Engadine in the other District 1 matchup, ended the season with identical playoff points 64.000. However, due to the Jets 20-14 win over Pickford on Sept. 14, the Jets are the top seed not only in the Region, but in Division 2 as a whole. They’d have home field advantage all the way through the semifinal round.

Friday night, FP looks to avenge the Week 6 loss at NC. The Jets, meanwhile, look to avenge the aforementioned two straight playoff losses.

Florence (8-2) at Shell Lake (9-1), Friday, 7 p.m., WIAA 8-player Round 2, Group B

After defeating Laona-Wabeno last week at Crandon, their first playoff win in eight years, the Florence Bobcats and head coach Kent Walstrom head west to the Minnesota-Wisconsin state line to face Shell Lake. The Lakers, who haven’t lost since Aug. 30 at Luck 56-28, are members of the Lakeland -8 Conference North Division. S-L was tested in a couple of their wins, but blew out their opponents in the others.

These teams have played one another in the postseason before, dating back to their 11-player days. In 1981, the WIAA playoffs had six divisions of 16 teams per division. Florence defeated Shell Lake 22-15 in the quarterfinal round that season. The Bobcats lost the following game in the semifinals, 17-6 to Poynette.
