Kingsford girls second at U.P. Final

MARQUETTE — It was a special day for the Kingsford girls’ cross country team here Saturday as the Flivvers brought home their first trophy from the Upper Peninsula Division 1 Finals.

The Flivvers earned runner-up honors with 69 points, just three behind Marquette, which won for the fifth time in seven years. Defending champion Sault Ste. Marie edged Houghton 79-80 for third place.

“I’ve been coaching for 14-15 years and we’ve never been in position to compete for a (U.P.) championship before,” said Kingsford coach Dan Carey. “On the first day of practice you don’t know what you have. Then, the girls began to believe in themselves and start pulling together. We peaked at the right time. We just needed the extra one or two places. Marquette is tough. We didn’t know what Sault had. We hadn’t seen them all year. This is our first U.P. trophy in school history. I think this will leave the team more hungry.”

Negaunee senior Emily Paupore won for the third consecutive time, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 18.7 seconds on this sunny, breezy and mild day at Gentz’s Golf Course in Chocolay Township. She was followed by Kingsford junior Melanie Wenzel (20:27), Houghton sophomore Ingrid Seagren (20:38.0), Negaunee senior Talon Prusi (20:42.2) and Menominee sophomore Hayden Buck (20:49.9).

“We trained hard this summer,” said Wenzel. “I think we all did good for running on a windy day. There were a lot of rolling hills on the course. We really had to pick it up there. We were very consistent. We were all getting our times down.”

Norway’s Adam Cavagnetto took second in the Division 2 boys race.

Kingsford (Iron Mountain) senior Sarah Kulas placed seventh (21:04.3), followed by Menominee senior Katie Anderla (21:14.1) and Kingsford freshman Taylor Demay (21:15.1).

Hancock retained its D-2 title with 34 points, followed by St. Ignace 56, Ishpeming 84, Ironwood 104 and West Iron County 106.

Freshman Maylie Kilpela provided Hancock with a first-place finish (21:16.9). She was followed by Munising freshman Hattie Cota (21:43.5) and Ishpeming sophomore Taylor Longtine (22:00.3).

West Iron junior Zoe Kolenda paced area runners in 11th (22:48.1), followed by classmate Avery Bociek (22:48.2). Freshman Taylor Adams was Norway’s leader in 20th (24:05.6).

In D-3, Chassell won for the third straight time and for the fifth time in six years with 36 points, followed by Mid Peninsula 73 and Cedarville 90.

Mid Pen sophomore Landry Koski landed her first title in 21:31.2, followed by Cedarville freshman Lilianna Cason (21:42.1) and Mid Pen junior Daisy Englund (21:49.4).

The Marquette boys won D-1 for the first time in five years with 51 points. They were followed by Sault 57 and Houghton 63.

Houghton junior Joe Wood took his first title in a personal-best 16:57.8, followed by Gladstone sophomore Giovanni Mathews (17:27.6) and Sault junior Jaron Wyma (17:30.8).

Ishpeming retained its D-2 title and won for the fifth time in six years with 27 points, followed by Ironwood 51, Gogebic 67 and Norway 92.

The Hematites got an individual title from senior Jonah Broberg (17:29.5), followed by Norway sophomore Adam Cavagnetto (17:33.9) and Ishpeming junior Jordan Longtine (17:48.6) and Gogebic (Bessemer) senior Adam Mazurek (17:48.5).

“I wanted to get up in front of the pack and stay with Jonah and Adam, and I think it played out the way I wanted it to,” said Cavagnetto, who improved his time from last year’s Finals by 3:20. “I’ll take a few days off and Thursday I’ll start preparing for track season. It’s fun. I get in the morning thinking about running and I go to bed thinking about running.”

Rudyard was crowned D-3 champ for the first time in 10 years with 73 points, followed by Dollar Bay 93 and Brimley 96.

Brimley senior Austin Plotkin gained his fourth straight title in 17:20.7, followed by Cedarville senior Thomas Bohn (17:31.1) and Brimley junior Cameron Hoornstra (18:00.5).
