IRON MOUNTAIN — The outcome was decided early as Iron Mountain completed its perfect regular season with a 42-18 win over winless Gogebic on Friday at Mountaineer Stadium.

“The coaching staff is extremely proud of each and every one of our players,” said Iron Mountain head coach Robin Marttila. “A 9-0 record is a great accomplishment and a credit to the kids.”

It’s on to the MHSAA playoffs, with the Mountaineers anticipating a home game in Division 7. “We’re going to watch the selection show on Sunday as a team,” Marttila said. “We start a new season next week.”

In dispatching Gogebic, Marcus Johnson connected with Caleb Evosevich-Hynes on four throws for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Dumais caught a 16-yard TD pass from Johnson as the Mountaineers built a 42-6 halftime lead before substituting in the second half.

Evosevich-Hynes was the leading rusher with 54 yards on just three carries. Bryce Pietrantonio had 53 yards on two touches, including a 1-yard TD run. Johnson and Caleb Burklund also had scoring runs.

Gio Colavecchi recovered a fumble and Johnson had an interception.

“Our seniors went out with a good win,” Marttila said, noting the 10th anniversary of the death of former IM athletic director Tom Johnson was a point of motivation. “He was a great Mountaineer,” he said.

The victory improved IM’s record to 7-0 in the West PAC Copper Division for sole possession of the conference title.
