Volleyball — Nordics rebound to defeat Cougars

EBEN JUNCTION — The North Dickinson Lady Nordics traveled to Superior Central on Thursday, defeating the Lady Cougars 3-0 (25-12 25-10 25-10) in Skyline Conference action.

“I thought the girls came out tonight with a lot more enthusiasm and were very aggressive to the ball,” Nordics coach Sandy Haustein said. “Our serving was stronger tonight but still could use some improvement. We had two girls with perfect serving — Ashton Hord and Skye Ledzian.”

Haustein also credited the Nordics’ back row for a “tremendous job” on serve receive. “Kassandra Cary did a great job blocking at the net with three block kills. Overall it was a great team win,” she said.

On Tuesday, the Nordics traveled to Stephenson for another Skyline conference tilt. Stephenson and coach Sara Johnson came away with the win 3-2 (24-26, 25-21,21-25, 25-20, 15-13).

“I thought both teams fought hard,” Haustein said. “It’s just too bad somebody had to lose and unfortunately it was us. We had a rough night serving, missing 16 serves which didn’t help.”

Haustein also noted that Briana Smith was 100 percent serving and had an all-around good game while Skye Ledzian was strong at the net.

ND returns home to entertain Skyline Conference foe Rapid River on Tuesday.

Niagara splits

CRIVITZ, WIS. — In Marinette-Oconto Conference volleyball action Thursday, Niagara traveled to Crivitz to take part in a triangular match with the host Lady Wolverines and Oneida Nation.

Coach Carol St. Arnauld and her team split on the evening, losing 3-0 (12-25, 17-25, 19-25) to Crivitz, but defeating Oneida Nation 3-0 (25-9, 27-25, 25-12).

“We played well in our first set against Oneida and lowered our play in the second but still took the match in three,” St. Arnauld said. “Against Crivitz, we started strong and kept them on their toes. We had chances to capitalize and take the win but we didn’t finish.”

Niagara hosts Wausaukee on Tuesday night before traveling to Marinette on Thursday to take on St. Thomas Aquinas Academy.
