Wykons secure postseason berth

STAMBAUGH — West Iron County’s Nathan Thomson racked up 142 of his game-high 151 rushing yards in the first quarter, and the Wykons crushed Gwinn 39-8 Friday evening in West PAC Iron Division football.

The Wykons (6-2, 5-1) earned an automatic qualification into the MHSAA playoffs with the victory.

“It was a good win,” Wykons head coach Mike Berutti said. “We were able to do what we wanted offensively. It was nice to get some guys back on the field and regain our focus after last week’s tough loss.”

Thomson scored two touchdowns in the win, both in the first quarter. The Wykons led 33-0 at halftime and had their 39 before Gwinn got on the board late in the contest.

Trey Bociek completed 5-of-5 for 109 yards and a 66-yard touchdown to Noah Lewis in the second quarter.

Berutti said the defense was led by Noah Thomson and Sebastian Saaranen.

“I’m happy for the kids,” he said. “They did a great job tonight. It’s nice to get our sixth win and qualify for the postseason. Now we turn our attention to Norway and look to stay on course.”

Shafaar Evans had an 18-yard rushing tally for the winless Modeltowners (0-8, 0-6).

The Wykons play at Norway in the regular-season finale next Friday at 6 p.m.
