Carney, Baumler sink ND

CARNEY — Max Baumler drained seven of Carney-Nadeau’s 14 three-point field goals and the Wolves downed North Dickinson 67-27 in non-conference boys basketball Friday.

The Wolves led 22-5 at the end of the first quarter.

“I thought we came out with a lot of energy,” said UP Hall of Fame Coach Paul Polfus. “We tried to pressure as much as we could. I thought we did a great job with the idea of making the extra pass on the perimeter. We didn’t turn the ball over much. I’m very happy with the way we played, especially with the energy we came out with.”

Brett LaFord led the way with a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 12 steals. Baumler finished with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Cameron Schultz led the Nordics with eight points and three steals. ND had 21 turnovers and 21 rebounds — seven by Brennan Donaldson.

“They jumped on us early with their three-point shooting and pressure,” said ND Coach Chris Mattson, noting 16 first-half turnovers. “We did a better job in the second half but the damage was done.

“Max shot the lights out. They were much more aggressive than we were.”

The Nordics (0-2) will host Stephenson on Jan. 3.

ND won the junior varsity game 34-32.
