FELCH — Ashton Hord scored 11 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter as North Dickinson held off Florence 55-52 in non-conference girls basketball Friday at Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium.

Hord hit three triples in the second quarter when the Nordics pulled out to a 31-18 lead.

“We did a good job of finding her,” said ND Coach Kirk Mattson.

The Nordics carried a 16-point advantage into the fourth quarter. But the Lady Cats closed to within three.

“We started out very aggressive on defense,” Mattson said of man and 1-2-2 zone defenses. “We had a great first-half defense. We were all over the floor.

“We ran a little bit out of gas because of our effort on defense. But give Florence credit. They battled the whole way.”

Briana Smith added 13 points and Skye Ledzian had 11 for the Nordics, who made six of nine triples in the game.

“We started out slow and had a hard time finding their shooters,” said Florence Coach Brad Perry. “Hord killed us. We made defensive adjustments after halftime.”

Madison Neuens led Florence with 18 points. Jordyn Springer had 13 points and Jenna Springer tallied 11 points and five assists.

“Madison Neuens did great offensively against their zone,” said Perry, also citing Haley Behrmann on offense. “We finished strong in the second half with an outstanding effort. We never gave up despite being down by so much. I am very proud of them for that.”

In Tuesday’s games, ND (1-1) hosts Republic and Florence (2-3) entertains Laona-Wabeno.

North Dickinson defeated Florence 31-17 in the junior varsity game.
