LANSING — Iron Mountain senior Gio Colavecchi and Norway senior Kody Hendricks were named to the Associated Press all-state football team for Division 7-8, as voted by a panel of 11 Michigan sports writers.

They were the only two U.P. selections on the first team.

Mountaineer senior Marcus Johnson and junior Caleb Evosevich-Hynes were selected as honorable mentions.

Colavecchi, a 6-foot-1, 265-pound center was AP all-state first team at offensive line. He was previously selected unanimously to the U.P. Dream Team. He was also named as the center on the Copper Division West PAC All-Conference team and was runner up as the Lineman of the Year in the Copper Division.

“Gio was our best Lineman on both sides of the ball and has been a three-year starter at center,” said Mountaineers head coach Robin Marttila. “We wouldn’t have been 12-1 without him this season, and he’s one of the best lineman I have coached at IM.”

Hendricks, 6-foot-4 1/2 and 235 pounds, was also named AP All-State First Team at offensive line. The tight end/defensive end was a three-year starter, including the past two seasons on both offense and defense. On offense he totaled 27 catches in 35 targets for 482 yards, 11 for first downs and three TDs. On defense, he had 85 total tackles from his end position, five for a loss, four sacks, 10 quarterback knockdowns, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Hendricks was Named All U.P. first team at TE, with consideration for the All-U.P. Dream Team. In the Iron Division of the West PAC Conference, he was named first team at tight end and defensive end and was runner up as Lineman of the Year. As a junior in 2018, he was selected to the All-U.P. first team as a defensive end.

“Kody was far and away the best defensive lineman I’ve seen in a long time,” said Norway head coach Scott Popp. “He was our team leader on both sides of the ball and in the locker room.”
