Patriots start campaign by cruising to 57-40 win over Lena

PEMBINE, Wis. — On Tuesday night in a non-conference boys basketball matchup, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots took a 57-40 victory over the Lena Wildcats.

Sophomores Ladon Kalkofen and Boone Larison led the way for G-P with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Max Beyer led Lena with a game-high 21 points, with five three-pointers.

The Patriots roster is made up of six sophomores, three juniors, and one senior in Josh Wallschlaeger. Head coach Jeff Zerbst reports that, with approximately 40 boys in the combined co-op of Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine High School and Goodman High School, 28 came out for basketball.

G-P fields not only a JV team, but what the WIAA calls a JV2 team, which plays a handful of games usually against U.P. freshmen teams or other JV2 teams in Wisconsin. The head coach of both JV teams is Joe Nutt, assisted by Klayton Jonas.

With 13 out of 21 scheduled regular season games at either Goodman or Pembine, Zerbst, in his second season as head coach, is happy about that.

“It seemed like every game was on the road last season,” he said. “I am glad it’s the complete opposite this season.”

On Friday night, G-P opens up Northern Lakes Conference play when they host Elcho at Goodman-Armstrong Creek High School.
