Flivvers knock off WIC girls in overtime 44-42

STAMBAUGH — Led by Brooke Kriegl’s game-high 24 points, Kingsford delivered West Iron County its first loss of the season with a 44-42 overtime victory here Tuesday evening.

Kriegl scored 18 of her 24 after halftime, including 12 in the final quarter and OT. She poured in five triples and added five steals, as the Flivvers recovered from an 18-11 halftime deficit. Kingsford hit 17-of-24 at the foul line.

“I’m proud of the girls for hanging in there and fighting back to get the win,” Flivvers head coach Lisa Harry said. “We finally got things going offensively in the second half. We were playing good defense throughout the whole game, it just took us a while to get our offensive flow going.”

Maggie Strehlow added nine points, and the Flivvers (3-4) had 10 total steals.

“The girls made some big plays in the fourth quarter,” Harry noted. “We started attacking the basket and crashing the boards which led to getting ourselves to the free throw line. We did a much better job putting in our free throws, which made the difference in the game.”

Emily Nelson’s 20 points led West Iron, which slipped to 5-1. Jordan Shamion also reached double figures with 10 points.

Jenna Olkkonen scored 14 points, Paige Olsen added 12, and Zoie Geronimi had 11 as Kingsford’s jayvees recorded a 67-21 victory.

Kingsford hosts Marquette Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Wykons remain home Friday, welcoming Forest Park.
