Jets tackle Eagles, 56-43

POWERS — The North Central Jets boys jumped out to a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter and then rode their defense the rest of the way to a 56-43 basketball victory over Stephenson Friday night in a Skyline Central Conference contest in Powers.

The Eagles (0-5, 0-4 SC) gave the Jets (5-2, 5-1) some fits offensively in their 1-3-1 and 1-2-2 zones, but the Jets’ defense held up to negate any chance of a comeback.

“We didn’t play particularly well at times. We played well at times and not so good at other times,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “It was a give and take game, back and forth a little bit. They closed the gap to around three at one point.”

Without having any official stats available, Malone noted Luke Gorzinski played really well on the offensive end and Brien Gronmark hit a few key triples, but defense was what won them the game.

“We only shot like 15-20% from the field, but we got critical buckets at critical times,” Malone said. “I’m proud of them for that.”

The Jets, who also won the JV game, host Rapid River Monday.
