Kingsford tunes up ahead of U.P. Finals in Marquette

MANISTIQUE – The Kingsford wrestling team traveled to Manistique on Thursday, Jan. 16 for a pair of dual matches versus the host Emeralds and Munising.

The meet was rescheduled from Dec. 12.

The Flivvers fell 48-30 against Manistique and defeated Munising 33-23.

“We lost some swing matches that didn’t go our way against Manistique,” Flivvers head coach Darren Groleau said. “Josh Peterson, Toby Wilcox and Ben Standish went 2-0 for the day.

“We just wrestled flat the whole day, and we wrestled to the level of our competition. We know we can do better and will be working on getting our stride back before U.P. Finals.”

The U.P. Finals are Saturday at Marquette. Prior to that, the Flivvers host Neguanee, Westwood and Escanaba today at Kingsford High School.

The Northwood Storm wrestlers traveled to Three Lakes, Wis., for a Northern Lakes conference double dual meet with Three Lakes and Wabeno/Laona on Jan 16. Northwood had only four wrestlers available to compete.

Northwood first went up against Wabeno/Laona, which only had six wrestlers on its team. Northwood lost the dual 36-12. Caitlyn Kelley (106 pounds) and Gabe Wysocki (220) scored wins by forfeits for Northwood.

Northwood next went against Three Lakes, falling 54-12. Kelley won on a forfeit and Wysocki won by a pin.

Northwood will next be competing in the Bayport JV tournament Saturday, Jan. 25.

Kelley will be competing in the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association Girls High School State Championships in Wausau.
