KINGSFORD — With four players scoring in double figures, West Iron County prevailed 62-57 over Kingsford in non-conference boys basketball action Thursday night from the Kingsford Middle School gym.

The Flivvers came out in a half to three-quarter court press which, early on, interrupted the WIC transition game causing Wykons turnovers. Staying mainly in a 2-3 defense with six-foot eight-inch junior Justin Nelson in the middle under the basket, the Wykons disrupted Kingsford half court offense.

After see saw action, the first quarter ended in a 15-15 tie. An 18-point offensive surge in the second quarter for the Flivvers was capped off by a three-pointer by sophomore Michael Meneguzzo with four seconds left, to give Kingsford a 33-27 halftime lead.

Kingsford extended their press to full court as the second quarter began, leading to more Wykon turnovers.

Despite coming out on the winning end of the game, WIC head coach Dan Schive wasn’t pleased with the amount of turnovers his team senior led team committed.

“Kingsford played really hard, and pressured us in to a lot of turnovers. We need to take better care of the basketball, and we need to run our offense more effectively,” Schive said.

West Iron was led in scoring by Nathan Thomson with 15 points, followed by Peyton Williams with 14, Nelson with 12 and Dolan Dobson added 10.

As the third quarter began, WIC got in to half court offensive sets and hit some three-point shots, which fueled a 13-5 scoring run in the first 3:52 seconds of the stanza.

“The third quarter was pretty special for them, outscoring us 20-9, after we led by six at the half,” said Flivvers head coach Dan Olkkonen. “We had a load inside with Justin Nelson, and I thought we did a good job on him, drawing him away from the basket.”

Olkkonen noted how proud he was of his team, for not giving up, for cutting the Wykons lead down from 10 three points near the end of the game.

“The crowd was loud and our students were into the game, which I think fueled our players,” Olkkonen said.

Cole Bracket led Kingsford with 12 points on the evening, Meneguzzo added 10, for the Flivvers (0-3, 0-1 GNC), who head to Houghton on Monday night for a makeup game from the first game of the season.

“Two games in a row, we’ve had some pretty exciting basketball. With this young team, we’re going to have bumps along the way,” Olkkonen said. “I can’t fault them at all for hard they played tonight.”

The game began with Nelson on the free throw line for the Wykons, due to a pregame technical foul being assessed to the Flivvers for a dunk attempt in pregame warmups. He made one of the two, to give WIC a 1-0 lead and they were awarded the basketball and the possession arrow.

West Iron returns home on Monday night, to also play a makeup game from the first game of the season, when they play Westwood. It will be the now 2-1 Wykons home and West PAC Conference opener.

Kingsford won the forfeited JV game over WIC. The Flivver Freshman defeated the Goodman-Pembine Patriots JV2 team 62-35, overcoming a game-high 19 points from Ryan Erickson of G-P. Ben Trevillian led Kingsford with 16 points, while Cole Myllyla chipped in 15.
