Forest Park boys charge back for win over Cougars

EBEN JUNCTION — Despite trailing for nearly the whole game, the Forest Park Trojans fought back to tie the game, force overtime and pull out a 61-58 win at Superior Central Friday night in Skyline Central action.

Forest Park had three players score in double figures, led by Gavin Johnson with 17 points, with 15 of them coming from behind the 3-point arc. Keall Emmers chipped in 16, with Tommy Showers adding 15 points for the Trojans, now 7-8.

“We stuck with the game plan and then added some pressure at the end to create some turnovers,” Forest Park head coach Kurt Lehmann said. “Emmers and Johnson hit some big shots to put it into overtime.

“We got behind by four points right away in overtime and Gavin (Johnson) hit another shot. We tied it up and forced a turnover with about 25 seconds left and ran the clock down.

“We got the ball inside to Showers for a really nice baby hook that he made and got fouled with 1.2 seconds left. He hit the free throw and they were unable to hit a half-court shot at the buzzer.”

Lehmann also noted that Superior Central is a much improved team and has a couple members playing some really good basketball.

“I’m really proud of the way the our boys fought until the end and staying positive with being down the whole game,” he said. “They really showed some pride and ability to come through at big times tonight.”

Forest Park, who returns home for the next two games, will entertain Norway on Tuesday night in a SCC matchup.
