Free throw carries Calumet past West Iron County, 64-63

STAMBAUGH — Calumet junior guard Elli Djerf sank a free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining, to seal a 64-63 win for the Copper Kings over West PAC Conference foe West Iron at the Charles Greenlund Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.

Djerf’s game-winning free throw gave her 31 points on the evening, to lead all scorers. She sank six trifectas, which was also game high.

West Iron had three players in double figures, led by senior center Emily Nelson with 15 points. Anna Malmquist and Jordan Shamion each added 13 points for the Wykons, who slipped to 9-8 on the season.

“Our team played with desire the whole game. We handled Calumet’s pressure and we were aggressive on offense,” said Wykons head coach Eric Shamion. “After playing last night (Thursday) at Forest Park and losing, the girls responded well tonight.”

Senior Ellen Sturos added 10 points for Calumet, who improved to 13-3 on the season with the win, which was a makeup game from Dec. 12.
