ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — The Kalkaska K-Stars 19U girls hockey team won the Tier 2 State Championship on March 6-8.

They defeated the Troy Sting, 11-0, followed by a 4-3 shootout win over Little Caesar’s.

Next, Kalkaska defeated Kensington Valley, 3-0. The K-Stars won 5-0 over Petoskey in semifinals, followed up by a 4-2 win in the championship game against Little Caesar’s.

Dickinson Amateur Hockey Association alum Aziza Burgoon finished her freshman campaign with the go-ahead assist in the championship game. Burgoon, a freshman at Iron Mountain High School and defensemen for the K-Stars, impressed her coaches with the willingness to battle against older girls and her team-first attitude, a team spokesman said.

The K-Stars won a berth in the National Championship tournament in Philadelphia; however, the tournament has been cancelled due to the coronavirus concerns. The team finished with a 39-10-5 record.
