UP icers earn accolades from Michigan coaches association

MARQUETTE – Six players from the Marquette Senior High School hockey team earned all-state accolades when the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association presented those honors in March.

Two seniors and a freshman were named to the first team in Division 2 as listed at mihockey.com.

Senior Gaetanno Cammarata made it as a forward and senior Jakob Peterson as a defenseman, while freshman Liam Beerman earned laurels as a first-team goaltender.

The balance of Redmen recognized made honorable mention lists.

Senior Cooper Anderson and junior Ansel Frost were named as forwards, while senior Andrew Fedrizzi earned a spot as a defenseman.

One other Upper Peninsula player was also a Division 2 selection — Escanaba’s Ethan Silverstone as a forward on the second team.

Ten players from the Copper Country made the Division 3 lists, led by four Calumet players making the first team — Dean Loukus, Scott Loukus and Tanner Rowe as forwards and Alex Studebaker as a goalie.

The other first-teamers were Austin Salani of Hancock as a forward and Ty Halonen of Houghton as a defenseman.

Also honored were Tucker Tapani of Houghton as a second-team forward, Lincoln Beiring of Calumet as a second-team defenseman, Jimmy Pietila of Houghton as a second-team goalie and Cam Kauppinen of Calumet as an honorable mention defenseman.

In addition, the coaches group also announced its 2019-20 Dream Team, including the naming of Mr. Hockey, Division 1 Saginaw Heritage senior forward Brady Rappuhn.

Rappuhn, a senior captain for Heritage, had 89 points in 28 games as his team reached the MHSAA semifinals before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Scott Loukus of Calumet was the lone U.P. representative on the Dream Team as he was cited for chalking up 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 points.

In addition to Rappuhn and Loukus, the Dream Team included Livonia Stevenson senior forward Seth Lause, Stevenson senior defenseman Nick Justice, Howell defenseman Dominic Rossi and Trenton goalie Joey Cormier.

When the MHSAA ended all winter sports tournaments, Marquette and Calumet were set for semifinal action.

Marquette (24-4) was set to take on Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (21-6-2) in a Division 2 tilt. Calumet (22-5-1) was matched up with Detroit County Day (25-3) in a Division 3 clash.

The co-operative Kingsford Flivvers squad was eliminated from the postseason by Marquette 7-1 on Feb. 27 at Mountain View Ice Arena in regional semifinal action.
