IRON MOUNTAIN — The Lady Mountaineers of Iron Mountain hosted a dual conference tennis matchup on Thursday with Westwood. The Lady Patriots defeated IM 7-1 in the Mid-Peninsula and West PAC Conference match at the East Side Tennis Courts, City Park and 25 Location.

“We started our season off in Westwood, so this was a good way to see how much we have improved since then. Even though the team score and some of the individual scores may not reflect improvement, it was easy to see that we have,” said Iron Mountain coach Marcus Celello.

“Our girls played excellent tennis today, and there is no reason to hang our heads. Westwood has an outstanding program, so it’s always great to be pushed, especially leading up to the final stretch of the season,” said Celello.

Claire Mongrain had a big win against one of the best players in the U.P. — Jenna Wealton — at No.1 singles, coming back to win the last two sets of the match.

“This is proof that when Claire is playing her game, she can beat anybody she’s matched up against,” Celello said.

Anja Kleiman strikes a shot at No. 3 doubles on Thursday for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers hit the road on Monday, traveling to Menominee for a non-conference match. On Thursday, Iron Mountain competes in the Mid-Peninsula Conference championship meet being held at Westwood and Negaunee jointly.

“It was nice to get back on track after some tough matches recently. We started our season against Ishpeming, and they have come a long way since then” said Celello. They are a young team, and they have improved a lot since we last saw them.”

“Our doubles players Bella Brown and Aziza Burgoon had a back-and-forth match, and I am proud of the way they fought through adversity to come out on top. Also, it was nice to get Rediet Husing back in our lineup after a one-match absence, as she and Anja Kleiman play well together,” Celello said.
