Nordics topple Rockets, 52-51

Mattson connects on game-winner

FELCH — Maximus Mattson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer Friday to give North Dickinson its first win of the season, 52-51 over Rapid River.

Mattson scored all 14 of his points in the second half as the Nordics withstood a 25-point fourth quarter from the Rockets. Brennan Donaldson led North Dickinson with a career-high 27 points, including five treys.

“Even our role players worked so hard,” said ND coach Chris Mattson. “We made some shots tonight.”

The Nordics led 34-26 entering the fourth, but Rapid River’s offense caught fire. “They just kept coming,” Mattson said.

In the closing seconds, a four-point North Dickinson lead evaporated in the wake of two straight 3s by the visitors. Trailing 51-49, the Nordics drew up a play for a “win it or lose it” three-pointer.

Donaldson, under pressure, found a teammate open.

“It was right at the buzzer,” coach Mattson said.

Max Lenaker led Rapid River with 15 points.

North Dickinson (1-5) travels to Bark River-Harris on Tuesday, the first of three road games next week.
