Flivvers slip past Houghton, 3-2, in pitchers’ duel

QUINNESEC — Kingsford pitchers Henry McRoberts and Sawyer Pugh limited Houghton to two hits as Kingsford defeated the visiting Gremlins 3-2 here on Friday afternoon.

Houghton plated two runs in the top of the first, but that’s all they could muster.

For Kingsford, McRoberts started on the mound and pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up one hit three walks and striking out three.

Pugh came in to close out the game, pitching 2 2/3 innings. He gave up one hit while striking out four to earn the save.

“Pitching was a highlight,” said Kingsford head coach Matt LaLonde. “Credit both teams for keeping the offenses in check for the majority of the game.”

It was a tough day at the plate for Kingsford against some solid pitching from the Gremlins.

“Their combination of pitchers was probably the best that we have seen up until this point. It was good for our players to see solid pitching early on,” LaLonde added. “Give credit to our guys for gutting it out and finding ways to get on base and score runs.”

At the plate Kingsford was led by Nolan LaVarnway and Dennis Neuens, who each recorded two hits, while Carter Kreski added one.

“It was one of those games where we really had to work hard to get base runners on and get the ball put in play, but again credit to Houghton’s pitchers for the work that they did on the mound,” LaLonde said.

The Flivvers improved to 3-1 on the season and remain home as they host Marquette on Monday and Escanaba on Tuesday.
