State group names Hartman athletic director of the year

EAST LANSING — Michigan’s professional organization of school athletic directors, the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, has selected Chris Hartman of Kingsford High School as the Region 1 athletic director of the year.

A Negaunee native, Hartman has been involved in the Iron Mountain and Kingsford schools for over the last 20 years, both as a teacher and athletic director. He served as the Iron Mountain High School athletic director for seven years and has been at the helm for Kingsford High School for the last two years.

As an athletic director, Hartman has served on the U.P. Athletic Committee for six years. He is also a registered official and has been officiating games for over 15 years, including a Michigan girls basketball state championship.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University and master’s degree from Marygrove College.

Hartman has helped host numerous MHSAA district events as well as other events and courses at Kingsford.

“Chris embodies the teamwork approach when it comes to all aspects of being an AD,” said Escanaba Athletic Director Anthony Perino. “His passion for the student-athlete and athletics is what stands out to me on a daily basis. Chris’ character and attitude make it easy to work with him, converse with and be there to assist other ADs when needed. You can tell Chris enjoys what he does as he is always thinking ahead or looking to discuss important topics in athletics. He knows what it takes to be successful in this position. Chris is very unselfish and a fantastic colleague and friend.”

The MIAAA is a 61-year old association with over 700 members serving as athletic administrators in numerous high schools and junior/middle schools in Michigan.

As partners with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the MIAAA works to promote the educational value of interscholastic athletics and the role and profession of athletic administrators.

Hartman is now one of only 14 athletic administrators statewide to be honored by the MIAAA.

“The MIAAA is very proud to spotlight work of Chris Hartman — a dedicated member of his community that puts others first while striving for excellence on and off the field of competition,” said Jean LaClair of Bronson High School, MIAAA public relations chair.
