Westwood earns tennis crown
KINGSFORD — The MHSAA Division 1 U.P. Girls Tennis Finals took place at the Kingsford High School tennis courts Wednesday. Seven teams, including the host Flivvers took to the courts, with competition also taking place at Lodal Park as well as the East Side courts in Iron Mountain.
The Westwood Patriots outlasted Division 1 tennis power Negaunee to capture this year’s title. The final team scores were Westwood 20, Negaunee 15, Escanaba 12, Gladstone 4, Marquette 2, Menominee 2, Kingsford 0.
The Patriots took four first-place finishes capturing the No. 3 and 4 singles, as well as No. 1 and 2 doubles. Negaunee took the title in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights, as well as in No. 4 doubles.
“I told the girls don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” said Kingsford head coach Tracy Rutter. “We had a great year, everyone continued to gain confidence and improvement. I am beyond proud of all of them, nothing to hang our heads about. Sad to see the season end, it’s a quick season and always hard when it’s over,” she added.
